Welcome to the official blog of the Actuarial Science Students Association (ASSAUD) at the University of Dar es Salaam!

After a long period of silence, we are delighted to reconnect with you through this platform. Since our last publication in December 2020, much has happened in the actuarial profession, the world of finance and technology, and within our Association. Today, we are opening a new chapter, renewing our commitment to sharing knowledge, celebrating achievements and strengthening connections within and beyond the actuarial community.

About ASSAUD

The Actuarial Science Students Association (ASSAUD) is a student-led association at the University of Dar es Salaam, bringing together students pursuing Actuarial Science and providing a platform for academic development, professional growth, networking and collaboration.

Our Association seeks to inspire students to develop the knowledge, skills and professional qualities required to contribute meaningfully to the actuarial profession and the wider financial industry.

Why This Blog?

The ASSAUD Blog is more than just a publication platform. It is a space for sharing ideas, communicating knowledge and documenting the growth of our actuarial community.

Through this platform, we aim to:

  • Share Knowledge: Publish articles, insights and discussions on actuarial science, insurance, finance, investments, risk management, data science and emerging industry developments.

About Bsc. In Actuarial Science In UDSM The  department of mathematics runs one undergraduate degree programme (Bsc. In Actuarial Science), in collaboration with department of Finance under University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS) and Department of Statistics under the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS). More on Actuarial Science IN UDSM, click here In Tanzania, University Of Dar es Salaam have not yet been accredited exemptions from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA)  . In doing so, for an actuarial science student from UDSM to  become an actuary, at fellowship level, h/she has to do a series of Actuarial Profession Exams. Father of Life Insurance - Elizur Wright

Elizur Wright (born on 12 February 1804), an American mathematician and abolitionist is described as the father of Life insurance as he campaigned that life insurance companies must keep reserves and provide surrender values. Elizur Wright (1883) Graduated from Yale university in 1826, he spent his early life being a Mathematics and Natural philosophy professor. Apart from his love for mathematics, he believed that slavery was immoral and ineffective and should immediately be abolished. Along with other like-minded individuals, Wright founded the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833 with the aim of espousing immediate abolition of slavery. The organization later on began to fall apart due to ideological differences among members. Wright eventually became estranged from the abolitionist movement due to lack of support and became interested in life insurance as a mathematical study.
