AN OPEN LETTER FROM ASSAUD PRESIDENT

Our trip to Kenya

Hello guys,
It is my hope that, all of you, have been doing well.

I am glad and thankful that we are back home safe, from the 7th Actuarial Convention and Innovation Challenge held at Strathmore University, Kenya. Our journey started on June, 9th in a group of 7 ASSAUD members and been there for 6 days, specifically for the event.

The event was successful, full of contents and inspiring. I wish, all of us could have attended the event because, It's something no one could have wish to miss it. But that shouldn't bother us, as I  believe that, to the best of our knowledge, we, who were able to participate in the event, can share what we were able to learn and experience, for the betterment of our profession in the country.

I would like to encourage all of you to engage yourselves in product design, research papers and try to create solutions to various challenges that our industry face. We should aim to expand our opportunities, increase value and recognition of our profession in the country.

Apart from that, I assume all of us heard of regulatory requirements of every company having an Actuarial Department. Most of us might have a feeling that our demand will increase. However, we should think of the positions we are to take in these departments with our current qualifications and compare them with the required qualifications.
In other countries, the bachelor degree isn't enough for one to hold a position in the Actuarial Department, and thus one has to pass a series of professional exams in order to have their seats.. I've a feeling that either individuals from outside shall overtake us and have more preferences by the companies as compared to us unless we decide to go some steps forward in our profession or the country and regulatory authorities at large may decide stand for us despite our humble qualifications and restrict employing outsiders.
I believe, we can stand for ourselves. Let us have a feeling of responsibility and a winning spirit. Otherwise, there is a possibility that we shall be under supervision of other people while there  is a chance that we can play well in the role.
I kindly ask you to think of this and get to work.

Of Paramount importance,  there have been development in science and technology (Artificial Intelligence in particular) were by it has been a threat that our demand might decrease in the future or we won't be needed at all.
It is a bit stressing. Its a relief that the machines won't replace actuaries but will simplify our works and thus it has become an important criteria for a modern actuary to be familiar with these stuffs, so as to be able to apply them.  One should try to be familiar with the computer programs and put an application in it, as they are of great importance.

I would also like to take this opportunity to appreciate and recognize the presence and support from the ASSAUD members at large, but at most, the ones I attended the event with. Please, try to contact them to learn more and more, they are full of contents apart from this short abstract.

With kindest regards,

 ASSAUD Chairperson
